Conduct Manual Tasks Safely

HLTWHS005 – Manual handling for personal care workers

This nationally recognised unit is designed specifically for personal care workers and those supporting clients with mobility needs. The course equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to perform manual tasks safely while protecting both workers and clients from injury.

Training focuses on correct body mechanics, risk identification and the safe use of equipment commonly used in care environments.

What the course covers

Participants learn how to:

    • Identify manual task hazards in care settings

    • Apply WHS principles to manual handling tasks

    • Use correct posture and body mechanics

    • Safely lift, reposition and transfer clients

    • Use manual handling aids such as hoists and slide sheets

    • Implement risk control measures to reduce injury

    • Follow workplace procedures and safe work practices

    • Protect both worker and client wellbeing during care tasks

    Assessment

    Assessment is conducted throughout the course and may include:

    • Theory questions

    • Group participation

    • Practical demonstrations

    • Observation of manual handling tasks

    Duration

    • One day (approximately 6 hours), inclusive of assessment

    Qualification issued

    • Nationally recognised certificate

    • Wallet-sized competency card

    Shift materials safely using manual handling methods

    TLID1001 – Manual handling for general workplaces

    This course provides the skills and knowledge required to shift loads safely using manual handling methods. It is suitable for workers who are required to lift, carry, push, pull or move materials as part of their role.

    Training is delivered in line with WHS and OHS requirements and is applicable across a wide range of industries.

    What the course covers

    Participants will learn how to:

    • Assess risks associated with relocating loads

    • Plan safe load movement

    • Apply correct manual handling techniques

    • Relocate loads safely using manual methods

    • Work safely as part of a team

    • Follow workplace procedures and WHS requirements

    Entry requirements

    • Minimum age: 16 years

    • Photo ID required

    • Basic literacy and communication skills

    • Sufficient health and fitness to perform tasks safely

    • LLN assessment may be required if necessary
